TODAY atypical for OUR BLOG ARTICLE: TALK is NOT about the TECHNICAL assistant, but about the NATURAL-INDOOR PLANTS. CAN THEY AFFECT THE MICROCLIMATE? IS IT TRUE THAT THERE ARE PLANTS THAT PURIFY THE AIR? Understand.
Widely thought: plants clean and even “sterilize” and “disinfect” the air in the room. This opinion is often enhanced by by reference to the information from NASA (National Agency for Aeronautics and Research Space, USA).

NASA, in fact, examined the possibilities of plants for clearing air. In 1989, was published a report entitled “The reduction of polluted air in the room with the help of indoor Plants” (“Interior Landscape Plants for Indoor Air Pollution Abatement”, the text is available on the Internet). Scientists have tested 12 varieties of plants. Their ability to filter three polluters: benzene, trichlorethylene and formaldehyde was studied. Among the results obtained, for example, the following:

Eliminate pollution in the test chamber during the 24-hour period.

«Interior Landscape Plants for Indoor Air Pollution Abatement», NASA 1989
Formaldehyde Benol Trichlorethylene
Dracaena Fragrant 70 21.4 12.5
Chrysanthemum Garden 61 53 41.2
Gerbera 50 67.7 35
Dracaena Varunki 50 52 10
Ficus Benjamin 47.4 30 10.5

Figures can really inspire if not to create a balcony garden, then at least to watering their cactus. But not everything is so simple. It must be borne in mind that the given data-digits achieved in test conditions. And more specifically, the conditions were as follows: The plants were installed in a special chamber, where it was organized the continuous flow of water and light. We certainly do not hold plants in their apartments. But, more importantly, the camera used the filter activated charcoal. In other words, the above effectiveness is the effectiveness of all equipped scientists of the system, and not just “green defenders”. This indicates the conclusion at the end of the report: “Potted plants together with activated carbon filters demonstrate the potential to improve the air indoors”. Efficacy in air purification of own plants is unknown.

In addition, besides these three, there are still many other air pollutants, widespread and harmful. Therefore, if you are thinking about microclimates seriously, you should bet not on plants that clean the air, and on specialized devices. One ripper with recycling function or cleaner-disinfecting recyclers replace the whole army of Ficus?

In fairness it has to be said that plants really have some effect on the microclimate. Firstly, they absorb carbon dioxide gas and some other volatile compounds. By the way, regarding carbon dioxide: some of it is allocated in the process of breathing plants-as well as people and animals. Secondly, plants distinguish volatile substances that oppose microorganisms. And although the statements that plants disinfect the air, are greatly exaggerated, some merit in the improving microclimate they still belong.

And for those who want to carry out their own tests, we picked up the seven most suitable for our latitudes houseplants.

Chlorophytum

One of the most unpretentious of domestic plants. Judge for yourself: Bright sun does not require, you can put even in the far corner of the room. In the heat is not needed, only 20 ° C. However, the summer loves to “swim”: it is desirable to spray it abundantly and not to leave the soil dry.
